Removing tattoos that were placed under pressure, coercion or manipulation
Joke’s story
CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN · STARTED APRIL 6, 2026
As the face of this campaign, Joke stands for a much larger group of women who have experienced humiliation, manipulation and abuse. She is taking this step while still in the middle of her own recovery. A choice that takes courage and strength.
During a destructive relationship, her ex-partner bought a tattoo machine online and used it to tattoo his own name on her body more than 250 times, as a mark of control and ownership. In the end, 90% of her body was covered with his name, his initials and phrases such as “property of”.
Joke is stepping forward not for attention, but to break something open. To make visible what so often stays hidden.
“If I can do it, so can someone else.” Joke
“For our clients, tattoo removal is not a cosmetic procedure, but a key part of their recovery: a visible step towards self-worth and a new beginning.”
About the crowdfunding campaign
Goal
To raise 15,000 euros for Joke’s treatment. Tattoo No More is contributing the other half; for her treatment alone an estimated 30,000 euros is needed. Donations above the target will be used to help other women in similar situations.
Who we help
Women who have been victims of narcissistic partners, sexual exploitation or other forms of coercion within a relationship, and who receive professional support from a recognised care organisation.
Applications
Applications can only be made through a professional counsellor, such as a psychologist, case manager or care professional from a recognised organisation. They submit an application on behalf of the client. Applications submitted directly by clients themselves will not be processed.
Context
Around 1 in 3 women in the Netherlands will at some point experience psychological abuse by a partner or ex-partner (Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and WODC). Because professional tattoo removal is costly, the foundation focuses on women living on a minimum income.
Support the campaign
Every donation helps Joke and other women close a visible chapter of a painful past. Together, we can make a new beginning possible.
